Managing Uncertainties

Study Guide

Wisdom is helpful in many ways—we learn to take strategic risks, diversify our work, and understand the world around us. However, Jesus is the only true wisdom. The gospel offers a hope that human wisdom does not, for it has the power to remove our sin, overcome death, and unite us with God.
Application
  1. Do you tend to be a risk-taker or avoid risk? What does it look like for you to live in tension with the “other side”? Describe some times when you need to move in spite of risk or times when you should stop and be strategic before taking action.

  2. The wisdom of the gospel is counterintuitive—God values what the world sees as weak. How have you seen this truth play out in your life? Where and when can you share your story in order to honor the gospel’s work in your life?

  3. One way we boast in the Lord instead of ourselves is through worship. How is worship an act of surrender? What steps do you need to take in order to make worship part of your daily and weekly rhythms?

Key Points
  • There are times when we must think strategically, and there are also times when risk is necessary and fruitful. On this earth, there will always be tension between the two.

  • Just as we cannot understand the wind or a baby being formed in the womb, so we cannot understand the God of the universe.

  • Wisdom is important, but it is not the cure to our brokenness. Only the gospel can resolve our greatest problem—separation from God.

  • The wisdom of the gospel is counterintuitive. What the world considers foolish is wise, the weak defeat the powerful, and the insignificant take on importance.

  • Jesus is the only true wisdom. He has the power to make us right with God when we put our faith in him.
